Free Cycle Action Sports Team will be performing a “Big Air” show for our school on Monday, October 20, 2014. The show will take place in the parking lot across Kent Street. The show will begin after the last lunch period; we will be following our activity schedule for that day. This show is always a highlight of the school year and will be used to “Kick Off” our Red Ribbon Week.
We need to have the parking lot across Kent Street completely clear of vehicles, please park across the bridge in the town lot. We understand that this is may be inconvenience, but appreciate everyone’s support in helping make this a great program for our students. Thanks in advance for all your support in helping to celebrate “Red Ribbon Week”!
Sincerely,

Red Ribbon Committee

Uniforms have arrived!!!

The second batch of PE uniforms have arrived and have been distributed to the students. This means that all students in grades 6-8 are required to wear the school approved uniform for PE class. We appreciate everyone's patience in waiting for the uniforms to arrive. Dressing for PE class in grades in 6-8 is required by the Board of Education and is a necessity for the students to participate in class.

Important Information

We are very fortunate to have worked with Shop-Rite over the past few years, more specifically their Resident Dietitian, Carly Sopko. Many of you had the opportunity to meet Ms. Sopko at our Back-to-School Nights. Carly has also come to our school and provided important nutrition information to our students. We have attached some important information about some great opportunities the local Shop-Rite in Washington is offering:

October calendar of events which includes kids cooking classes, product samplings, FREE weight loss store tours and presentations in the community.

On Monday evenings at 6pm I will be hosting weight loss store tours during which I will lead a group around the store and show you where to find healthy products and foods to support your weight management goals. All tours will also include tasting SAMPLES! See below for dates and topics and feel free to forward the information to anyone who may be interested.

Oct 13: Learn about Lean Proteins
Oct 20: Good Fats vs. Bad Fats
Oct 27: The Truth about Carbohydrates

Email me at carly.sopko@wakefern.com to sign up for any of these tours : ) Also keep in mind that you are always welcome to stop by and weigh-in or have a free body fat screening if you are working on losing weight on your own. I am here to help and support you in any way that I can!

If you are a member of a local club, group or organization such as scouts, Moms club, church groups, etc. I am able to come to your local meetings to give a presentation on a nutrition topic of your choice and there is no charge for this service. Let me know if you'd like to set something up for the fall or winter or if I can be of service to your organization in any other way.

Important Reminders

The first batch of PE uniforms have arrived, the second batch is being ordered. Classes in grades 6-8 are expected to change for PE class into the school uniform. If the uniform has not been delivered yet, then the students must bring in a separate change of shorts and T-shirt in order to participate in class.

We are doing our best to get outside with some of our PE classes and want to remind everyone that the field could be damp especially in the morning. We are encouraging students to bring in an old pair of sneakers that can get wet, and a dry pair of socks so students can change into dry shoes and socks before heading back to class.

We are encouraging students in grades 4 & 5 to bring in a extra T-shirt and deodorant to put on after PE class. We believe this will make the transition to changing for PE class in grade 6 much easier.

Kindergarten Soccer will begin on Monday September 15th. Soccer will be held on the back field, from 3:05 PM until 3:35 PM.

Family Life.
Reminder students in Grade 5 have a homework assignment, Writing to a Hero. This assignment is part of our Patriot Day lesson. The assignment is due Thursday September 18th.

Classes Have Started

We know that this first week of school can be very hectic, and we appreciate everyone's support. Grades 6-8 are required to change into the school PE uniform in order to participate in class. We will be requiring students to change into shorts and a T-shirt until the uniform orders have arrived. Once they have arrived the students will be required to wear their uniform each day for class.

The school board, physical education teachers and administration feel that changing clothes to participate in physical education classes promotes positive hygiene and safety during the classroom activity. Students are expected to change from their school attire to the gym uniform. The school attire should be stored in the school locker room with the students’ own personal lock. The lock may not be left on the locker when the student does not have gym. The locker is provided for student use only when they have scheduled physical education class. Students who do not lock their clothes in the temporary locker provided are doing so at their own risk and the Oxford Township Board of Education will not be responsible for items lost or stolen. All students in grades 6-8 are expected to change to the approved uniform for gym. If a student does not have the appropriate uniform for physical education class they will be determined to be unprepared for class and will lose credit for the day’s activities and they will not be allowed to participate. The cost of the school-approved gym uniform will be borne by the parent/ guardian. The school board will make every effort to assist those in financial difficulties and these cases will be managed on an individual basis. The school board will require the chief school administrator to show diligence in providing the most costly options available each year. Furthermore the chief school administrator is required to implement procedures and, as needed facility modifications, to provide the highest level of personal privacy in the student locker rooms.

Please contact the Board Office if you are need of an order form to purchase the uniforms. Any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mr. C. or Mrs. Hart. The most effective way to communicate with us is to email us:

Welcome Back

We hope everyone has had a safe and relaxing summer and we anticipate the students excitement in starting a new school year. This year we will be focusing on increasing personal fitness levels in PE class. We will start by completing some base line testing to establish a starting point and then work through the year to increase levels of fitness. We will concentrate on fitness with each PE class, but please understand that we need students to work outside of the school day to show significant improvement.
Uniforms will be required for all students in Grades 6-8. Order forms are available on the school website. Best of luck to everyone for a great school year.

Great Trip

The 7th grade has just returned from a great trip to South Jersey where they participated in activities that help us to understand the estuary and barrier island ecosystems as part of our MARE program. We looked at many different habitats and learned how these habitats are used by both animals and humans. The students also looked at human impact on the environment. Although the trip was tiring, the rewards were worth it. Congrats to all the students for a great trip and a HUGE THANK YOU to all the chaperons who make the trip possible.

Thanks Officer Masenior

The 5th Grade class celebrated their participation in the "Too Good for Drugs" program by attending an Educational Day baseball game at Coca Cola Stadium, home of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Although we had some concerns with the weather, Mother Nature and a positive attitude help make this a great day. Many thanks to all the teachers who helped make this such a successful day.

Eat Your Meat & Beans
Carly Sopko, RD
ShopRite of Washington

It is very important to include foods from all of the food groups throughout your day. Whenever possible, try to include foods from several food groups in each of your meals. Each food group offers a different selection of nutrients and we need all of them for our bodies to work their best. Meat and beans are great sources of protein and we need protein for our muscles, our blood, tissue maintenance, our bones, and the making of many enzymes that help with digestion and other important bodily functions. These are just some of the reasons why it is important to get our protein in our diet.

Animal sources of protein include chicken, turkey, fish, pork, beef and eggs. Plant sources of protein include beans, nuts, and legumes. Make sure there’s protein on your next plate!

Ask for Carly next time you are in ShopRite of Washington to help you locate these and other healthy options for adding protein to your meals

Miss Scovell is teaching a unit in Nutrition to our younger students. The students have been reading a story about "Little D" who is a dragon who is learning about nutrition. Each class "Little D" grows and the students add "scales" with foods on them placing them in the correct food groups.
