The Hard Work Continues!

Congratulations to the the students who have qualified to represent Oxford Central School on the 2012 Archery Team. Tryouts where extremely demanding for the students and the hard work they have put into improving their skills was evident in their scores. Trimming the team to the mandated 24 archers is one of the most difficult tasks we have as coaches. Our sincere thanks goes out to all the students and parents who have once again demonstrated tremendous dedication to the team. The archers will be shooting their state qualifying tournament on March 6, 2012. The shoot will take place immediately after school and will be scored by New Jersey Fish and Wildlife representatives. Spectators are welcomed to attend the state shoot and we hope the community makes a strong showing to continue supporting our team. Please contact us with any questions regarding the team.

Cooperation

Our primary grades students are working on cooperation skills. These physical education lessons coincide with our family life lessons which remind the students about the importance of working together and how valuable everyone is to the group. The parachute allows everyone to share in the responsibility of the group. If everyone does their job, the activity is successful. If parts are missing the activity will not be successful. This leads to some great discussions with the students.

We hope everyone enjoyed their break and are refreshed as we begin 2012. Letters for the students who have qualified for archery tryouts were sent home before the break. Please make sure the letters are returned ASAP, even if your child chooses not to participate, the letter still needs to be returned. Archery tryouts will be held the week of January 16th. Archers will be required to shoot 2 competitive scoring rounds before January 19th. An average for the rounds will be calculated and the top 24 archers will qualify to represent Oxford Central School at the state tournament sometime in March. All archers need to have all of their medical clearances from the school doctor. Any questions please contact the school for clarification.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and blessed Holiday Season. We hope everyone has a chance to "recharge" their batteries and enter 2012 excited about school. Please remember that we will have "OPEN GYM" time beginning January 3rd in the morning. Morning times will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. Afternoon times will be Monday through Thursday from 3:05-4:00 p.m. The open gym time is for archers to get extra practice. Only archers who have all of their paperwork completed with the school nurse may participate in open gym. Tryouts for the team will be held the week of January 16, 2012. Mrs. Hart and myself would like to offer our sincere thanks to Sensei Paul Kilduff for volunteering two weeks of his time for our students at OCS. For the second year, which we hope will be an annual event, Paul came to our physical education classes and instructed the students in the basics of Isshinryu Karate. The students had so much fun breaking boards and hitting the pads. Sensei Kilduff demonstrates the qualities of good character that we try to teach our students. THANK YOU SENSEI from all of us.

Lockers

Many thanks to the Oxford Board of Education for purchasing basket lockers for the boys and girls changing rooms. The baskets will allow students to place their belongings in a secure place while attending physical education classes. The students may bring in a lock to place on the basket while in class, but MUST remove the lock at the end of the class. This will allow all students to use the lockers while in physical education class. The baskets are the perfect spots for students to place their DEODORANT and change of shirt while participating in class. We have been addressing with each class, grades 3 - 8 the need to bring deodorant (non-aerosol) in use before and after class.

4th Grade Poster

Our 4th grade students are participating in the annual poster contest for the Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey. The students are to create a poster on a single 8.5" x 11" white copy paper poster that highlights "Fun Things to Do Instead of Doing Drugs". The focus should be on the students artwork, and they should limit the amount of text so the poster can be reproduced if chosen as a finalist. Fire Prevention Week

All of our Family Life Classes will be discussing Fire Prevention week. We are working with the Lehigh Valley Health Network and the Burn Prevention Network to delever important information to our students regarding fire prevention. Our younger classes will be learning the importance of STOP, DROP, ROLL, COOL, CALL! They are working on different safety messages and identifying what a firefighter would look like in a fire so they are not scared. Our older students are developing escape plans for their houses. We hope all of our Oxford families practice home fire drills and emergency procedures to help prevent fires. Our school doctor will be visiting the school on October 18, 2011. During his visit he will be reviewing the physical papers parents have submitted to the school. All students must have a current physical in order to participate in any before or after school activities. We will be starting to have some open gym times in the morning for students to have additional practice with archery. If any student is planning on trying out for the archery team this practice time is an opportunity to get more repetitions which will help in their performance. Kindergarten Soccer began this week with an incredible turnout of 23 students. The kids have a lot of energy and are doing a great job. Now we just have to get Mother Nature to cooperate with us so we can get lots of playing time. Thanks to everyone for their support.

Kindergarten Soccer

All Kindergarten students are invited to join an after-school, intramural, soccer program. Soccer is held Tuesday through Thursday beginning at 3:05 pm and finishing at 3:35 pm. Your child does not have to attend all the days just when they are available. The program is designed to allow students from both Kindergarten classes to interact and play games. This NONCOMPETITIVE program allows students to learn more about soccer and the basic rules. Games are strictly for fun and we do not worry about the score. No special equipment is needed to participate, if your child has cleats or shin guards they may wear them, but please do not go and purchase these items for our program. As we prepare for the beginning of a new school year, we would like to offer some ideas that will help all students find success in our Physical Education and Family Life classes. Please consider the following things when preparing for the school year:

ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR SNEAKERS THAT TIE FOR ALL PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS!!!
Students in grades 4-8 should minimally have a change of shirt for P.E. class. Changing into sweat pants or shorts is also recommended.
Students in grades 4-8 should also have deodorant or anti-perspirant to use after class. (NO AEROSOL CANS)
Students who have P.E. class in the morning should consider bringing in an old pair of sneakers and dry socks to help keep their feet dry when we are on the field in the morning.

Students should have a small note book for Family Life class, as well as a folder for handouts and worksheets. We will provide folders for our 4th grade students from the Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey.

Same But Different

With Field Day being held in a new location this year, many concerns were put to rest with a very successful day. Many thanks to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department for supporting us and giving up their time to help out with Field Day. Although we did not have the picturesque back drop of Oxford Furnace Lake, the field and black top areas worked great for Field Day and logistically everything went well. The kids seemed to have a great time and parents were very supportive of the move back to school. We started Field Day with a "Pep Rally" in the gym that got the kids pumped up and was a really good start to the day. The students moved around to all the events cheering and laughing and having fun. What a great way to end the school year. Thanks again to everyone for supporting our Family Life and Physical Education programs. Have a safe and happy summer!!!

FIELD DAY 2011

Field Day this year will be a little bit different than in the past. We will be holding all of our events at Oxford Central. All the students will be participating in events throughout the day on the back field and on the side blacktop area of the school. Families are welcome to come and cheer on the students. We will still be separating the school into blue and gold teams so the students can have some FUN competition. Hope to see everyone at OCS on June 16th!

Happy Anniversary Oxford Emergency Squad!!!

On Saturday, May 21, 2011 the Oxford Archery Team helped celebrate the Oxford Emergency Squad's 40th Anniversary by marching in their parade. What a great time the archers had traveling through Oxford and cheering for the crowds. The parade was a very important community event and Squad 39 pays a huge part in the success of our archery team. Each year they help us with fund raising efforts, a major factor in getting the archery team to Kentucky. What a great way to show our appreciation for all they do for us. Many thanks to Peggy Hissim for her dedication to the Oxford community and the Emergency Squad. Also a big thanks to Chris Czarnecki for putting the archery float together for the team and organizing the archery team's part in the parade. The team received a beautiful trophy for being the most energetic and spirited youth group in the parade. The trophy will be displayed at the school with all the archery team's hardware from over the years. This trophy is very special to us, being recognized in our home town.

It is truly a pleasure to be welcomed as part of the Oxford community, and I am so proud of the accomplishments of the team over the past 5 years. We look forward to representing Oxford and New Jersey again in 2012.

National Tournament

The Oxford Central Archery Team once again represented New Jersey with pride at the National Archery in the Schools Program National Tournament. The team shot 95 points higher than they did at the New Jersey State Tournament. The team shot a score of 3250 which placed us 18th out of 104 middle schools. This is a tremendous accomplishment, considering the qualifying score for the tournament was raised 200 points this year, resulting in a much more competitive tournament. We had a great trip to Kentucky and I would like to thank everyone who helped us get there.

A huge thank you goes out to our D.A.R.E. Officer, Josh Masenior of the WTPD. Our 5th Grade students are completing their final lessons in this year's D.A.R.E. program. Officer Masenior has been coducting the classes the last two years. In celebration of the 5th Grades achievements, we visited Coca-Cola Park on Tuesday May, 3 to watch the Iron Pigs play the Buffalo Bison. Everyone had a great time and the students got to see a great ball game. The students learned how to keep score while at the game. Visiting the ball park has become a tradition at OCS for D.A.R.E. classes instead of having a graduation ceremony. We will still recognize all of the D.A.R.E. graduates at our awards ceremony at the end of the school year.

The 8th graders will be playing the Oxford Central School Staff on Tuesday May 3rd at 7:00 PM in the OCS gymnasium. This is becomming an annual event, with all proceeds benefitting the OCS Archery Team. Please come and cheer on both teams! There will be baked goods for sale, and we are giving away a brand new bicycle to someone in the auidence. Please come out and show your support! Ticket prices are $3.00 for ADULTS and $1.00 for STUDENTS

ARHCERY FUND RAISING

With our trip to Louisville, Kentucky on the horizon, the archery team is hosting some fund raising efforts to help offset the cost of the trip. April 17th the parents of team members will be collecting money at the intersection of Rt. 31 and Rt. 46. This would not be possible without the tremendous support we receive from the Oxford Township Emergency Squad. The Squad donates their time to us which allows us to run this fund raiser. If you are out driving around this Sunday, come by any donation is greatly appreciated it. The archery team is also selling flowers for Mother's Day. Please see the school's web site for the order form. The flowers are always beautiful and available at a great price. What a great way wish someone a Happy Mother's Day.

TCHOUKBALL

No it is not a misspelling, it is a game we are playing in physical education classes. The game comes from Switzerland and focuses on teamwork and communication, skills we are really trying to develop in our students. The students throw a ball (Tchouk) into a rebound frame and the other team tries to catch it. The frames are similar to the "pitch back" frames we used to use as kids. The game is a lot of fun and offers a chance for everyone to participate. The attached video clip will give you a better explanation of the game. Hopefully warmer weather is coming and we will soon be getting back outside with our physical education classes. Please remember to have students bring in deodorant and a change of shirt for class. This is especially important in grades 4 and above. As always please contact us with any questions.

Mr. B. finished his first student teaching placement last week. He is leaving OCS and heading to East Stroudsburg High School North, where he will have a secondary school experience. We hope all the knowledge he gained here at OCS will make his high school student teaching experience successful. I am sure he will come back and visit us before the school year ends.
Family Life classes in grades 6-8 are working on their Human Growth and Development unit. Younger grades are spending time working in a character education unit.

WOW, FIVE STRAIGHT

The archery team found out on Tuesday March 8th that we won the New Jersey State Archery Championship. The archers performed above and beyond once again. Their confidence grows everyday and we will once again have the opportunity to represent New Jersey at the National Archery in the Schools Program, National Championship. Congratulations to all of the archers all of your coaches are so proud of you.

Kylie Hibbett prevailed as the top female archer in the state of New Jersey!

Danny Farkas once again is the top male archer in the state of New Jersey!

A shoot out was held on March 8th to determine the individual rankings for this year. Congratulations to Paige Bechtle, Kaitlyn Lauziere and David Czarnecki, they all were involved in the shoot out this year.

A special thanks goes out to our archery coaches, Renee Hart, Victoria Ficarra, Jennifer Saxton, and Matt Hibbett. Without their constant support and dedication, our program would not be as successful. Please take the opportunity to thank them if you get the chance.

Now the hard part of the season begins, raising our funds, and sharpening our skills for Louisville.

Congratulations to everyone, I know we will represent the community of Oxford well and make everyone proud.

MARCH IS ROARING IN!!!

March is coming in like a lion for this years Archery Team. We will be hosting a shoot for the state championship on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at the Oxford Central School. The shoot will begin approximately 3:15 PM and take place in the gymnasium. Please come out and support our team as they "Strive for Five", defending our state titles.

On March 8th we will be hosting a friendly archery scrimmage in the gymnasium beginning at 3:15 PM. Our archers will be shooting with Harmony Township School and our own Oxford Alumni. The shoot is a chance to get more exposure for the archery program. Once again, spectators are encouraged to come out and show their support for the team. Also on March 8th, NJN will be here to film a story on the archery program here at the School. The show will air later this year, we will make sure everyone is aware of the dates.

February is Dental Health Month

February is dental health month. The students will be learning about dental hygiene during their Family Life Classes. There are some great resources available for families that will help to strengthen children's dental habits. You may be hearing about the cavity creeps or learn to be healthy. These are excellent interactive web sites that the students will be using during classes. The fifth grades will begin the DARE program on Monday, February 14th. Officer Masenior, from the Washington Police Department, will be our DARE officer once again this year.
Physical Education classes will continue working on their floor hockey skills. Please help your children to remember their gym days. Sneakers must be worn for class. Boots, of any kind, are not acceptable footwear for the gymnasium floor. Students need to be prepared for class. Thanks for your continued support. After a very difficult process, the OCS Archery Team for 2011 has been finalized. Congratulations to all the students who tried out for the team. Each year the process of putting a team together to represent our school becomes more difficult. All in all it is a great problem to have. Karate Comes to OCS!

Golden Rule Karate is coming to our school to provide some basic Karate skills for our students. We are very excited to share our physical education classes with them. Please make sure that students come to physical education class with comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. Students will be given time before and after class to change clothing if they desire to change. This is the first time we have had our classes participate in Karate and hope that the discipline and structure they learn will carry over into the academic classes.

Volleyball Continues in Physical Educaiton Classes!

Our Physical Education classes are continuing to work on "Volleyball" skills. Students participate in many games that involve their volleyball skills. Our goal is to get them familiar with the game and the basic strategies involved. Many classes play a game of "Newcomb" which is similar to volleyball, but participants are allowed to catch the ball or hit it when the ball comes to them. This is a great way to introduce them to volleyball. The students really enjoy when we cover the net so you cannot see the other side. This makes sure everyone pays attention, because you have no idea where the ball is coming from.

4th and 5th grade students are working on the Mental Health section of the Learn to Be Healthy website: Parents can follow along with the students assignments by viewing the website. This is an excellent resource that we use in all of our Family Life Classes. You may sign-up for the website for free and participate in the interactive web pages. The students really enjoy the website and the information is frequently updated.

Family life classes will be continuing discussions and lessons that focus on values and morals. Our younger classes will be focusing on human body systems. Letters have gone out to the 40 students in grades 6-8 who have demonstrated, through rubric scoring, excellent potential in our archery program. Tryouts for the 2010 - 2011 archery team will be taking place during the next few weeks.

The girls did a great job earning their RED Petal for being strong and courageous. The girls worked hard on fitness activities and discussed the importance of Veterans Day and how courageous our Veteran's are serving the United States of America. Because of all their hard work, the Daisies earned their first pedal. The girls also gave me some wonderful cookies and a beautiful card. Thanks so much to all the girls, I am very proud of you all.

4th Grade Family Life

Our 4th grade students are participating in a Drug Free poster contest for the State of New Jersey. All 4th grade students were to complete a poster that was submitted to the state for a contest. The top 2 posters chosen by the state will be included on a folder next year and distributed throughout the state to students. The poster was designed to deliver a "Drug Free" message. Good luck to all of our entries.

Round #2

Students in grades 6-8 will be shooting another round of archery for scores during their physical education classes. This second set of scores will complete the scoring rubric used to determine the students ability, knowledge and attitude. The students whose rubric scores are in the top 40 will be asked to try out for the 2010-2011 Oxford Central Archery Team. The top 40 will shoot competitive scores with the top 24 scores making the team. This can be a stressful time, but we believe that healthy competition helps the students mature.
The open gym time in the morning will still be available to all students who are shooting archery in physical educaiton class. This open gym time will continue until the top 40 students are determined. After the top 40 are determined the time before and after school will be dedicated to the students who are trying out for the team. Our own Oxford Central School PTA has procured the funds for us to purchase a DDR (Dance, Dance, Revolution) for the students to use as part of our Physical Education classes. It is awesome to see the students and teachers so excited about coming into the gym and moving to the beat. We will be highlighting the DDR system at the PTA Vendor Night on Thursday, November 11, 2010. Parents will have the chance to come out and see the DDR system and how we are using it in P.E. classes as a station for our classes. Mrs. Hart and myself cannot express our THANKS enough to the PTA and their constant support of all the programs here at Oxford Central School.

We are beginning gymnastics this week in our physical education classes. The gym is set up with all of our equipment and the students are participating in the "Animal Walks", which help us develop more advanced skills. The unit will run until the first week of November. Students in grades 5-8 will be producing contracts on the balance beam and the tumbling mats highlighting skills that they have mastered. Once gymnastics is over we will be completing our first round of our archery unit.

Mrs. Hart and myself would like to welcome Mr. Brad Bartow to Oxford Central School. Brad is a student at East Stroudsburg University and is completing his Professional Development School (PDS) during the second marking period. After our winter recess, Mr. Bartow will be student teaching here with us during his third quarter of college.

October is Cancer Awareness Month

October has been marked as Cancer Awareness Month throughout the United States. We typically associate October with Breast Cancer Awareness and the wearing of pink to show our support to those who have this deadly illness. October also presented us with Live Strong Day, learning more about testicular cancer from Lance Armstrong, a well know cancer survivor. Our 8th grade students participated in presentations from Northwest New Jersey Community Action Program Inc. (NORWESCAP). We are very fortunate to have representatives Jim and Sarah come to OCS and deliver such powerful information regarding cancer to our students. We learned about keeping ourselves safe from cancers, such as using the correct sunscreen and becoming familiar with changes in our physical appearance that could be warning signs of cancer and should be checked by a doctor. Our Kindergarten students are off to a quick start with their after school soccer program. We have a great turnout this year with over 90% of our students participating in the intramural program. As we begin the new school year we will be concentrating on kicking skills (soccer) for our physical education classes. We will be trying to use the back field (weather and conditions permitting) for our physical education classes. Please remember that students who have physical education classes in the morning, may wish to have an old pair of sneakers to use on the field. The cool mornings produce a lot of dew on the field and we do not want to have anyone ruin their new school shoes. Also a clean, dry pair of socks is a good idea to have in the students back pack to use if necessary. We are really trying to get our students in grades 4-8 to bring in a change of shirt for physical education class. Personal hygiene is being stressed with all the classes and having a fresh shirt and stick deodorant to put on after class will help students stay clean and will also help their social interactions.
Family Life (health) classes will be focusing on the definition of health and wellness. We will concentrate on the different aspects of the health triangle:
Physical
Mental / Emotional
Social
All of these components are important and we will be investigating on effects of a positive attitude towards personal health.

Hope everyone had a great summer. Just some helpful reminders about the Physical Education program. Everyone must wear sneakers for classes, preferably tied shoes. Students in the a.m. classes may want to bring in an older pair of sneakers with a change of socks. We suggest this due to the grass being wet in the morning. Also, older students (gr.4-8), we encourage them to bring a change of clothes and roll-on/stick deodorants. These are the age groups that students are beginning to go through changes and we are always reminding the students about hygiene. Remember to check your children's schedules for PE days; dress comfortably and ready for activity on these days. Health classes will begin the first full week of school. As the end of the school year approaches, a very special event takes place. FIELD DAY is scheduled for June 14th. The students of OCS participate in a variety of team events throughout the day at Oxford Furnace Lake. The day is a celebration of cooperation and teamwork, skills we work on during our Physical Education classes. The school will be divided into 2 teams, blue and gold. Activities take place on the beach and in the parking lot, with teams earning points for each event. At the end of the day a winning team is announced, in all reality everyone wins. Parents are welcome to attend and have fun with the students. Please remember that the students will walk to the lake after coming to school, but will be dismissed from the lake at 12:30 pm. Students riding buses home will board the buses at the lake. Hope to see you there!

The archers did a great job at this years National Tournament. We believe the team finished 18th out of 106 middle schools. Kylie Hibbett finished 4th in the nation in the 6th grade girls division and Ryan Witner finished 15th in the nation in the middle school boys division. All of the archers should be proud of their performance and the way the team represented New Jersey. Official results are still pending, a problem with one of the scanners that read the scorecards was detected. In order to maintain the high level of honesty and integrity of the program, all scorecards are being scanned again and the results should be posted some time this weekend. As soon as I find out the final results I will post a summary on this blog.

We have arrived in Kentucky and the archers are ready to represent New Jersey at the National Tournament. We practiced last night and got acquainted with the arena. There will be 690 archers on the line at one time, THE LARGEST ARCHERY TOURNAMENT IN HISTORY! This is such a great experience for the archers and parents. Nothing compares to the look on everyone's face as the enter the arena and just gaze at the size of the facility.
The archers are confident and practiced well. I believe it reflects the hard work they have demonstrated all year. As soon as we know any results, I will be in touch. Thanks again to everyone for their continued support.

Once again the archers from Oxford Central School have prevailed as the New Jersey National Archery in the Schools (NASP) Champions. In a program that is growing each year in New Jersey, the OCS archers prove to be the best team in the state. Through dedication and hard work, the archers participated in the state tournament by hosting a virtual shoot on March 18, 2010. The team shot a 3129, the highest total posted by a school in the history of the state tournament. Now the hard work begins as the team prepares to represent the state of New Jersey at the National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. The National Tournament will take place May 6th-8th with approximately 6,000 archers participating in the tournament.

Both the female and male state champions are members of the Oxford Central Archery Team. Kayla Gallo and Danny Farkas are the individual state champions and will each receive a new bow for competition from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Congratulations to all the team members, we look forward to representing the state at the national level and are confident we will REPRESENT!!!!!!!!

New Jersey Archery State Tournament

The archers have been working extremely hard practicing before and after school in preparation of the state tournament. The tournament will take place immediately after school and finish approxiamtely at 4:30 pm. The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) has been growing each year in the state of New Jersey. This year over 40 schools throughout the state participated in NASP, with new schools beginning the program each month. Daisy Olympics at OCS

Congratulations to the Oxford Daisy troop for a successful participation in the Daisy Olympics held March 4, 2010 at Oxford Central School. The girls were working for their "strong" pedal. The afternoon combined a slalom obstacle course, a two person bobsled, and our own version of curling. The girls did an outstanding job and demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship cheering and encouraging each other during all events. Mrs. Hart and I could not be more proud of the effort demonstrated by the Daisies. We are hoping this is the beginning of new annual event for our school, I do not think we can wait 4 years like the other Olympics do. Thanks to all the troop leaders for their support!

Archery Team Set for 2010

Over 40 students participated in try-outs for this years archery team. The competition was very close and only a few points separated archers for the top 24 spots. As a result of the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) regulations, a team may only consist of 24 archers. Our 2010 team is practicing both before and after school, trying to obtain an elusive 4th straight state title. Archery has grown exponentially throughout New Jersey and each year the competition gets tougher. This year's archery team is as strong as ever, and we anticipate a very successful state tournament. The team will shoot for a state title on March 18, 2010. The tournament will take place at Oxford Central School, beginning at 3:05 p.m. Please come out and support our archers as they strive to represent New Jersey at the national tournament in May.

APE Class participates in Special Olympics

Our Adapted Physical Education class is practicing skills for basketball as part of the Special Olympics program. This is new to Oxford Central School, so the students are spending time practicing a variety of skills that will enable them to become more efficient players. We will not be competing in Special Olympics this year, hopefully with in the next couple of years we will have the opportunity to show case our students in a competition.
Mr. Egan and Mr. Nuscis are now full time student teachers working with Mr. C. and Mrs. Hart respectively. They are both from East Stroudsburg University and plan on graduating in May of this year. They are both anxious to be here and Mrs. Hart and myself are happy to have them in our Oxford family.
No Name Calling Week is celebrated January 25th - 30th. Students made buttons with the slogan "No Sticks, No Stones, No Dissing to show their support and work to put an end to name calling here at OCS. On Thursday, students sat at new tables in lunch with other students whose buttons were the same color. This will hopefully begin some new friendships among out students.

As we begin 2010 we are quickly approaching the end of the 2nd marking period. Hard to imagine that this school year is almost 1/2 over. Students will be completing their second archery rubric in physical education classes over the next two weeks. After the rubrics have been scored, a letter will be sent home to all students in grades 6-8 who qualify to try out for the archery team. Please remember that arrow totals are not the only criteria for making the team. Attitude, behavior and ability to self-correct are also very important qualities on our team. Fitness will be a strong focus on all physical education classes. Please remember that it is recommended that school age children are active for a LEAST 60 minutes a day. This along with a balanced diet will help with all aspects of child's development.
Family Life classes are focusing on human body systems and how they interact. Students in the upper grades are pretending to be different organs and writing letters to their bodies to show their importance. No Name Calling week is quickly approaching and Family Life classes will be concentrating on No Name Calling week, January 25 - 29th.

Busy Time of the Year!

It is hard to believe we are almost finished with 2009! Students in Family Life classes have been participating in lessons that deal with responsibility (our character education word for December). Students have learned that being responsible means that you finish tasks when they are given to you. As we mature we need to take responsibility for our own actions, which helps to build our self-confidence.

Physical education classes have been playing volleyball and newcomb as we learn to strike without an implement in our hand. This helps to build our hand eye coordination. We also have learned how to play a position on the court and which position is responsible for a specific area.

REBEL 2 students are planning their lessons to teach to our 4th and 5th grade students. Please encourage your 6th, 7th or 8th grade students to participate in our REBEL 2 program. It is a great way to get involved in an extra-curricular club and both Warren Hills and Warren Tech have the REBEL program for their students. It is never to early to think of how it looks to be involved with school programs. Our next meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2010. We are always looking for new members.

Cold and Flu Season

Help to prevent the spread of germs by washing your hands often. Here are some tips from our Family Life Classes:

When should you wash your hands?
• Before preparing or eating food
• After going to the bathroom
• After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has gone
to the bathroom
• Before and after tending to someone who is sick
• After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
• After handling an animal or animal waste
• After handling garbage
• Before and after treating a cut or wound

Family Life classes will discuss ways to show adults that they are responsible. Students will be working on responsibility activities designed to help them "own up" for their behavior. Someone with a strong self-confidence is willing to take responsibility for their actions.

Physical Education classes have finished the first round of rubric scores for archery. These scores will be combined with another round of rubric scores to determine who is eligible to try-out for the archery team. Reminder that there is an open gym 7:30 am - 8:10 am for students to get extra practice with archery. This is open to any 6-8 grade student.

GASO

Many of you may have seen the fence at the back of the school with the letters GASO written in plastic cups. The letters stand for the Great American Smoke Out which takes place on the third Thursday of November each year. This year GASO takes place on November 19, 2009. Students in our REBEL 2 program decorated the fence, produced buttons from our new button maker, and wrote a proclamation that will be read and signed at the November 19th Board of Education meeting. All these efforts are to inform our students about the hazards of smoking. We encourage all smokers to take a 24 hour break from cigarettes and hope that they will prove to themselves that they can do it and begin the process of quitting cigarettes all together. The REBEL 2 students are wearing GASO pins, and when someone approaches them about the button, they explain what it means and why we are participating. After explaining, REBEL 2 students may present the other person with a pin to wear also. The idea is to get our information to spread throughout our school!

Gymnastics Ends... Archery Begins

Our gymnastics unit will be finishing up the week of November 2, 2009. When we return from our break we will be introducing archery in physical education classes grades 4 - 8. Archers in grades 6-8 will be assessed with a rubric designed to show their knowledge of the sport and safety procedures along with their score. This rubric will be completed twice in physical education class and used to determine the students who are eligible to try out for our competition team. Grades K-3 will be concentrating on cooperative games. Our focus in class remains on NON-COMPETITIVE games and we organize activities so all students can find a level of success.
In family life classes we will be focusing on RESPECT as our new character education word for November.

It is hard to believe that the first marking period is almost over! That means it is time for Mr. Doniloski, Mr. D. to move on to another placement. He will be student teaching in a high school for the next 8 weeks. We all wish him well, he did an outstanding job at Oxford Central and all of us at the school will miss him. It is rare that a student teacher makes such an impact on a school, but Mr. D. made our school a better place during his short time with us. We know that he will be successful and we look forward to having him visit us. Mr. Nucsis and Mr. Egan will be continuing to work with us two days a week and will student teach when we come back from winter break.

We are starting gymnastics the week of October 19! During this time students are encouraged to bring in a change of clothes that will enable them to move freely. We will be working on our gymnastics unit until parent teacher conferences. In order to give the older students, grades 4-8, the opportunity to complete their contracts for gymnastics we will not be meeting for Family Life during gymnastics. We look forward to this unit every year and anticipate success for all of our students.

Both gentlemen are here from ESU fulfilling their requirements as Professional Development Students. Mr. E is working with Mr. C and Mr. D. Mr.N is working with Mrs. Hart. Mr. E and N will be at OCS on Mondays and Wednesday's until December. In January, both will return as student teachers working with Mr. C and Mrs. Hart. Say "hello" and welcome them to OCS.
In PE, students will be finishing soccer/rip flag units. Our archery program will be starting in mid-October. Gymnastics will follow in November. In health, students are finishing their courage activities. They will begin to focus on hygiene, germs, and the importance of handwashing.

The seasons are changing!
Just as we move into fall, we are bombarded with a sports bonanzas on television. Baseball is approaching the playoffs, football has begun, hockey is in pre-season and basketball is just around the corner. In physical education classes, students are participating in both soccer and flag football activities. Mr. D. is completing his unit in flag football by having the students experience a variety of "rip flag" games that utilize football skills. Six ball soccer has again surfaced and the students have been doing a great job learning the nuances of both offense and defense.
In family life classes we have been concentrating on the word COURAGE and discussing the many definitions of courage and how we can show it in our daily lives. We also have been discussing all three aspects of health: physical, mental and social. Keeping ourselves clean is a major focus for the health and physical education department. We are constantly reminding students of the importance of an extra shirt for physical education classes as well as a stick of deodorant. Also a change of sneakers for those students who have physical education classes in the morning.
Kindergarten Soccer has begun and we have a full field of small and energetic athletes kicking the ball around. We run the soccer on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, (weather permitting) from 3:05pm to 3:35 pm. If you get a chance come out and watch, you will truly enjoy yourself.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy summer! Now it is time to get back to the hard work of another school year. We would like to welcome Mr. Jason Doniloski (Mr. D.) who is joining us from East Stroudsburg University. Mr. D. will be teaching classes along with Mr. C. as he finishes his college education.
Please remember that students in grades 3-8 should try and bring in an extra shirt for physical education classes. We have talked to the students about the importance of good hygiene and keeping themselves fresh throughout the day. Deodorant and Anti-Perspirant are also encouraged for these students. Students having physical education classes before lunch, may also wish to bring in an old pair of sneakers to wear outside when the field may still be damp.
Physical education classes will be concentrating on soccer and flag football skills. Family life classes will be concentrating on COURAGE lessons and building positive self-esteem.

State Champs 2009

The Oxford Archery team once again were named state champs last week. This is a great honor for the students and community of Oxford. The archers will be heading to Louisville, Kentucky to represent the state of New Jersey at the national tournament. This year the national tournament is expected to be the largest tournament in United States history with close to 4,000 archers competing.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone for their support of our program. The dedication of the archery families is second to none, and the support from our administration and board of education make it possible to participate in a quality program. The archery team will be reaching out for donations to offset the cost of the trip. We have been very successful in the past raising the money needed to cover the cost of the trip. Thank you to everyone who contributes time, talents and funds for our team.
The archery team is having a flower fund raising sale. Please contact the main office at school if you are interested in purchasing some beautiful flowers for your home, or also a great Mother's Day gift.
Our 6th - 8th grade students are currently studying Human Growth and Development in Family Life classes. Our younger students are getting ready to begin studying about nutrition. We are getting ready to get outside again with our Physical Education classes now that the weather is starting to cooperate. Please remember that students should bring in dry socks and a change of shirt for Physical Education classes. We also recommend roll-on deodorants for students in grades 4-8. If we are outside in the morning the grass could be damp and we want the students to have dry socks and/or shoes to put on after class.
We are hoping everyone has great Spring Break and look forward to busy but fun end of the school year.

Students will be completing dental health activities. The second graders continue to work on completing their human body posters.

6-8
All students, remember to get the parent permission slips for the puberty unit signed and returned to Mr. C and Mrs. Hart as soon as possible!!!!!

In PE, students continue to participate in cooperative games, station work, the rock wall, physical fitness, floor hockey, and tchoukball.

February Is Dental Health Month!!!

Students in grades K-4 have been learning about their teeth in health. They also have been learning about the importance of brushing properly and flossing. We also talked about what to expect when they go for a dental check-up.
Grade 5 students continue to learn about drugs and alcohol with our DARE officer.
Students in grade 6 are learning about the dangers of tobacco. Finally, grades 7 and 8 are learning about alcohol from Ms. Napoli.

In physical education, students have been participating in cooperative games, floor hockey, and basketball activities this month.

2008-2009 Archery Team

Sixth through Eighth grade students participated in the National Archery in the Schools Program(NASP) in physical education classes. The students were scored twice on a rubric designed to focus not only on their individual score, but their behavior, attitude, and knowledge of the sport. The top 40 students received letters inviting them to shoot off for a spot on the state competition team. The top 24 scores from the shoot off qualified for the team. Congratulations to all the students who were invited to try outs. The success of the program is based on the commitment of the students and parents. Thanks to everyone for their continued support. We will do our best to prepare our team and represent the town of Oxford at the state tournament.

No Name Calling Week

January 26, 2009 begins No Name Calling Week. Students will be discussing how name calling can be hurtful. The old saying that "sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me!" is not really true, and name calling can hurt someone. Students will be participating in lessons designed to teach them about the seriousness of name calling and bullying. No Name Calling Week is recognized nationally, and we want Oxford Central students to participate in No Name Calling the rest of the school year. It's QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT TIME!!!!! Students in grades 5-8 will be getting their study guides this week. Assessments will be given next week during pe/health classes. End of 2nd marking period is January 27th.

This week in phys.ed. students will continue work within the basketball unit.
In health, work will continue on body systems, nutrition, tobacco, and the DARE program for the 5th graders.

Happy New Year!!!!

We want to welcome to the Health and Physical Education department, Ms. Dawn Napoli. Dawn is a former student of OCS and a resident of Oxford who will be student teaching with Mr. C until early March.

Students will be participating in basketball activities during physical education this month. Students in grades 6-8 will also complete the final rubric scoring for archery. Mr. C and Mrs. Hart will be compiling scores from first marking period with the current scores to put together the schools try-out team. Letters will be coming home soon to eligible candidates. Good luck everyone!

Our 5th grades started DARE last week with Officer Malcolm. The students are very excited and enjoying their weekly lessons with Officer Malcolm.
